Energy-efficient cogeneration for a greenhouse complex

Two 2G Avus 1600e combined heat and power units, with a combined capacity of over 2 MW, provided the agricultural enterprise with its own electricity and heat, reduced fuel costs, and laid the foundations for additional income from the sale of surplus electricity.

We carried out the supply, installation and commissioning of a containerised cogeneration plant. Since being commissioned, the equipment has been providing a stable supply of electricity and processed heat to meet the needs of the greenhouse complex.

Inquiry

The client approached us with the task of rapidly increasing its own generation capacity to protect its greenhouse complex from the risks of power cuts and rising electricity costs. The company was already operating cogeneration units from another manufacturer; however, the actual efficiency of the equipment fell short of expectations, and the lead times for new solutions did not allow for rapid scaling up of generation.

An additional objective was to utilise all the heat generated to maintain a stable microclimate in the greenhouses during the winter months and to create the opportunity to sell surplus electricity to the grid.

Conclusion

Prior to the implementation of this project, the site was already operating cogeneration units from another manufacturer. This enabled the client to assess the new equipment against actual operational performance figures. Following the commissioning of the 2G units, the complex’s actual efficiency confirmed the stated technical specifications. Moreover, natural gas consumption turned out to be even lower than forecast, whilst electricity and heat production proved to be more stable and cost-effective compared with the solutions previously used at the plant.

The new cogeneration plant has provided the company with self-sufficient electricity and heat generation, reduced natural gas consumption for electricity generation, and confirmed the efficiency figures stated by the manufacturer. In addition to meeting its own needs, the company is now able to feed surplus electricity into the grid.
