Biogas plants on pig farms

We design and implement biogas plants in Ukraine, taking into account the specifics of pig farms, types of manure removal and characteristics of raw materials. We guarantee efficient biogas production, reduced emissions, and compliance with environmental requirements.

Without a biogas plant:

  • Fixed costs for manure removal and disposal.
  • Spreading unpleasant odours around the farm.
  • Risk of soil and water contamination.
  • Decreased attractiveness of the property for investors.
  • Dependence on the energy market and tariffs.

With it, you get:

  • A source of energy and profit from waste.
  • Odour reduction and environmental benefits.
  • Compliance with EU standards.
  • Investing in biogas plants.
  • Energy independence and predictable costs.

About raw materials

Pig manure is a promising raw material for biogas production, but its effective use directly depends on the manure removal system. The best option is a self-flowing system with minimal water addition (1:1): manure accumulates in sealed tanks and retains high gas potential. This is the standard for modern farms.

Hydraulic washing (1:10) significantly reduces the concentration of organic matter, increases the volume of reactors, and calls into question the economic feasibility of the project. Cold storage on deep litter has good potential for biogas production, but the manure removal system itself, which operates once a month, is not adapted to the daily supply of raw materials required by a biogas plant, and the raw materials require additional special processing (in particular, grinding), which makes the project more expensive.

To increase efficiency, we recommend adding co-substrates (silage, distiller’s grains, pomace) to liquid manure — this allows you to increase the organic load and biogas yield, improve the energy balance, and make the installation more cost-effective.

Special attention should be paid to the storage of raw materials. If manure accumulates in open lagoons or mixes with large amounts of wastewater, a significant portion of its methane potential is lost. Proper sealing, minimising oxygen access, and optimal storage time are critical to maintaining high gas production levels.

Biogas technologies for pig farms?

Pig farms are real growth points for biogas plants in Ukraine. Since pig manure is very liquid and has a relatively low concentration of organic matter, we design agricultural-type CSTR reactors with membrane gas holders and optimise the process by adding co-substrates — silage, distiller’s grains, and litter.

Depending on the method of manure removal, partial pre-treatment is applied: pre-treatment (if manure is on coarse bedding), grinding, heating during the cold season, and mixing in buffer tanks. Manure separation is carried out only if it needs to be pumped through pipelines over long distances, but if the farm and the biogas plant are located nearby, there is no need to separate manure on the farm. Homogenisation of liquid manure takes place directly in the reactors.

The quality of biogas depends on the feed: high protein = more H₂S. Up to 1000 ppm, we use activated carbon filters, above that — biological scrubbers. Upgrading to biomethane requires drying and removal of siloxanes. When using mixed raw materials (e.g., chicken manure + pig manure or slurry), a combined purification system is selected.

The optimal strategy is to combine upgrading with cogeneration (CHP), which allows you to create a single energy system for the complex and the farm supplying raw materials. This guarantees the energy independence of the biogas complex. In addition, SCADA and commercial accounting systems are being implemented: from raw materials to biomethane — everything is under control.

Biogas. The main types of Pro-Energy plants

    Frequently asked questions

Which manure removal system is best suited for biogas production?

Pig manure with litter provides the highest biogas yield because it has a higher organic matter content. This raw material provides maximum energy potential and stable conditions for the growth of methanogenic bacteria.
Self-flowing manure systems can also be used effectively, but all other things being equal, manure with litter allows for a higher biogas yield and better project economics.

Is it possible to build a biogas plant on a farm with hydroflushing?

Yes, it is possible. However, biogas plants in Ukraine that operate with hydroflushing (1:10) require significantly larger reactors due to excessive dilution of raw materials. This affects the economics of the project — capital costs increase and biogas production decreases. In such cases, we recommend adding other raw materials for biogas — for example, corn silage or pomace — to increase biogas yield.

How quickly will a biogas plant on a pig farm pay for itself?

The payback period depends on the configuration of the system, the type of animal husbandry, and the volume of manure. On average, a biogas plant on a large farm pays for itself in 5–7 years. Biogas plants in Ukraine are often financed with the support of the EBRD or private investors.

What to do if the farm is old and keeps animals in cold conditions?

In cold conditions and deep litter, pig manure does not lose its potential due to the type of raw material, but due to prolonged storage without processing. When manure accumulates for months, part of its methanogenic potential is lost even before it enters the biogas plant.

At the same time, manure with bedding has a higher biogas yield than liquid manure from self-melting systems, even if the bedding is changed once a month. Therefore, the key factor is not the type of housing, but the organisation of the timely collection and delivery of raw materials for processing.

There are two effective solutions for such farms: participation in a cluster biogas project with centralised manure processing or modernisation of the animal housing system with the parallel introduction of energy-efficient solutions.

Should pig manure be mixed with other types of raw materials?

This is recommended to increase productivity. Biogas production can be more efficient if energy crops (silage, grain), food industry waste, or pomace are added to the manure. This combination increases biogas yield by 30-50% and optimises the use of the fermenter volume.

What is the gas yield from pig manure?

On average, the biogas yield from pig manure is 20–30 m³ per tonne when using a self-flowing system without excess water. In the case of hydroflushing, the yield drops to 10–15 m³/t, which significantly complicates the economics of the project. We perform detailed calculations before launching each biogas plant.

Can biomethane be exported from a biogas plant?

Yes, provided that the biogas is purified to biomethane quality in accordance with European requirements. We sell plants for the production of biomethane from manure that comply with RED II certification standards. This allows farms to export biomethane to the EU, in particular through the sustainability certificate system.

Is your project eligible for financing from the EBRD or other institutions?

Yes, we have experience in implementing biogas projects in Ukraine with the support of international institutions, including the EBRD, NEFCO, and other climate funds. Biogas plants in the agricultural sector are a priority area for financing. We help to prepare all the documentation, carry out a feasibility study and agree on the terms of financing.
