Cogeneration unit is a modular unit built based on gas piston engines.

The station is based on a piston engine that runs on natural gas, propane or biogas.

The simultaneous production of electricity and useful heat is described as cogeneration (CHP). The heat generated during electricity production is not simply emitted into the atmosphere but is used for heating, cooling or steam generation.

This is what makes cogeneration technology efficient and climate-friendly. It saves up to 40% of primary energy. And the CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 60% compared to conventional power generation.

Advantages of having your own cogeneration plant:

up to 90%
Efficiency

Such a high coefficient indicates the efficiency of fuel use and the maximum reduction of energy losses, which makes cogeneration economically and environmentally beneficial. For comparison, traditional systems that produce heat and electricity separately lose about 60% of their energy.

from 10%
gas savings

This is the minimum percentage of savings after replacing a traditional boiler house with a cogeneration unit. The real potential of the technology implementation can reach much higher values.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    About gas cogeneration

    What is cogeneration?

Cogeneration is a technology of combined production of electricity and heat within a single unit. Unlike traditional generators, it efficiently uses fuel and minimizes energy losses.

Simultaneous production of two types of energy. The efficiency of such systems reaches 80–90% (compared to 30–40% in conventional generators).

It is used for enterprises, communities, and municipal systems. It allows reducing energy costs and increasing autonomy.

    Cogeneration: operating principle

The principle of cogeneration is simple: an internal combustion engine (gas-piston or gas-turbine) generates electricity, while the by-product heat, which is usually wasted, is transferred through a heat exchanger and reused.

This can be for building heating, hot water supply, or technological needs.

Thus, the same amount of fuel provides two types of energy, and in some cases — even three (in trigeneration mode, when cooling for air conditioning is added).

    Cogeneration: pros and cons

    Advantages of cogeneration:

    • High energy efficiency (up to 90% instead of 30–40% in classical systems).

    • Energy independence of an enterprise from the centralized grid.

    • Reduced costs for electricity and heat.

    • Possibility of integration with renewable sources (biogas, hydrogen).

    • Reduction of CO₂ emissions thanks to rational fuel use.

    Disadvantages of cogeneration:

    • Initial capital investments.

    • The need for a stable fuel source (gas or biogas).

    • Economic efficiency depends on market prices for fuel and electricity.

    What is a cogeneration unit?

A cogeneration unit is an energy module that simultaneously produces electricity and heat from a single fuel source.

It consists of an engine (gas-piston or turbine), a generator, and a heat exchanger.

Modern units are produced in a containerized “plug-and-play” format — they are easy to transport, connect, and integrate into existing infrastructure.

The power of such systems ranges from several dozen kW to several MW, which allows them to be used both in the hotel business and at large industrial plants.

How does a cogeneration unit work?

The operating principle of a cogeneration unit is similar to that of a conventional generator, but with efficient heat utilization.

    • The engine generates electricity from fuel.

    • By-product heat is collected from the cooling system.

    • Thermal energy is used for heating, hot water, or production.

    • If integrated with absorption chillers, the unit can also produce cooling (trigeneration).

Operating principle of a cogeneration unit

The process can be described in three stages:

    • Electricity generation — the engine or turbine converts fuel into energy.

    • Heat recovery — heat is not wasted but directed into the heating system.

    • Heat utilization — for heating, hot water supply, or industrial processes.

Thanks to this, the overall efficiency of the unit reaches 80–90%.

    What is the cogeneration mode?

Cogeneration mode is a way of operating an energy unit when two types of energy are simultaneously generated and used: electrical and thermal.

In practice, this means that the enterprise receives electricity for its processes while at the same time heating buildings or production facilities.

When chillers are added to the system, the mode shifts to trigeneration: simultaneous production of electricity, heat, and cooling.

    Cogeneration unit on natural gas

Natural gas cogeneration units are the most common solution for businesses and communities in Ukraine. They provide the optimal balance of cost and efficiency. Gas-piston models are suitable for small and medium-sized businesses. Gas-turbine models are designed for large enterprises with high consumption. They save 30–50% of energy costs. They can also work in combination with biogas or hydrogen to increase environmental friendliness.

What fuel is used for cogeneration plants?

The fuel for cogeneration can be natural gas, biogas, hydrogen, and propane.

What can electricity and heat be used for?

The energy obtained from the cogeneration process can be used for various purposes and in various industries. It is a full-fledged source of energy for:

    • meeting own electricity needs of enterprises, industrial and residential buildings, and the grid;
    • technological processes, space heating and cooling needs (trigeneration);
    • backup power supply.

Can a cogeneration plant also be used for cooling?

Yes! A cogeneration system can also meet cooling needs. To do this, we connect an absorption chiller to the cogeneration system so that the waste heat is used for cooling. Such systems are called tri-generation systems because they produce heat, cold and electricity at the same time.

How does cogeneration reduce greenhouse gases?

Cogeneration is an environmentally friendly, highly efficient and cost-effective way to generate electricity. The technology reduces greenhouse gas emissions by capturing waste heat from electricity generation and using it for heating. This saves fuel, your costs, and reduces emissions.

How common is cogeneration in Ukraine?

Cogeneration is becoming increasingly common in Ukraine, especially among industrial enterprises and commercial facilities. Legislation favoring the development of cogeneration plants and providing them with incentives is contributing to the further growth of this sector. In addition, government programs and initiatives to support renewable energy sources also contribute to the proliferation of cogeneration systems in the country, for example, at biogas plants.

What types of engines are used in cogeneration plants?

In general, gas turbines, internal combustion engines or piston systems are used for cogeneration. Pro-Energy uses the second and third options for its customers. Our cogeneration units are equipped with gas-piston internal combustion engines.

How much heat and electricity can be obtained from a cogeneration unit based on a reciprocating engine?

The actual amount of heat and electricity that can be produced from an installed reciprocating engine cogeneration unit depends on various factors, such as the type and amount of fuel burned. We make individual calculations for each client, taking into account the specifics of their business and goals. We invite you to a consultation where we can provide you with specific data and answer your questions.
