Our client is an agricultural enterprise specialising in grain production, for which we delivered the construction and launch of a biogas plant aimed at diversifying revenue and generating additional income from processing crop residues; the optimal solution was to convert the produced biogas into electricity for sale under a feed-in tariff.

Characteristics of the cogeneration plants

3.12 MWh is the total installed capacity of two cogeneration plants.

1.56 MWh is the output of each cogeneration unit separately.

Solution

At the time of the client’s request, Ukraine had a feed-in tariff, so we proposed installing a biogas-based cogeneration unit to generate electricity for sale and heat to maintain the required process temperature at the biogas plant, ensuring both additional revenue and operational efficiency. The next stage included installing a 200 kW ORC module to utilise excess heat and produce additional electricity for the plant’s own needs.

During implementation, we faced challenges with transporting oversized equipment and delays due to permit procedures, followed by disruptions caused by the full-scale war. As foreign specialists could not arrive, our engineer was urgently trained in Germany, and commissioning was completed using AR/VR technologies in collaboration with the manufacturer, enabling successful remote coordination and project completion.

Conclusion

As a result, the project to install two cogeneration units at the biogas plant was fully implemented. The customer is now using its own biogas and generating electricity to sell to the grid at a feed-in tariff and get additional income. The client uses the heat produced in the cogeneration process for the technological needs of its own biogas plant.

Despite the difficulties with the launch of the equipment, we successfully completed the project. This is due to the synergy between our strategic partner, the equipment manufacturer, our team, and the client.

In addition, our own rule helped us a lot: finish what you start.
